Dạng câu hỏi Line Graph là một dạng khá phổ biến trong bài thi IELTS Writing Task 1. Để ghi điểm trong phần thi này, bạn cần có một lượng kiến thức nhất định về từ vựng và chiến thuật làm bài.

1. Định nghĩa xu hướng trong IELTS Writing

• Xu hướng, hay còn gọi là Trend, thường xuất hiện trong đa phần các dạng bài IELTS Writing Task 1, đặc biệt phổ biến trong dạng bài biểu đồ đường – Line graph.
• Có hai loại xu hướng chính thường gặp: Xu hướng tăng (upward trend) và xu hướng giảm (downward trend).
• Một biểu đồ được cho là có xu hướng khi có từ ba mốc thời gian trở lên.

2. Các cấu trúc diễn đạt chỉ xu hướng

There + be + (a/an) + adj + noun + in + noun/ noun phrase + time phrase.

Ví dụ:

⟶ There were upward/rising trends in the consumption of hamburgers and pizza over the 25-year period.
⟶ There was a downward/falling trend in the consumption of fish and chips between 1975 and 2000.

Noun/noun phrase + see/witness/experience + (a/an) + adj + noun + time phrase.

Ví dụ:

⟶ The consumption of hamburgers and pizza saw upward/rising trends over the 25-year period.
⟶ The consumption of fish and chips witnessed a downward/falling trend between 1975 and 2000.

Lưu ý: Một biến thể khác của cấu trúc này là Time (month, year, period…)/Place (city, country, continent…) + see/witness/experience + (a/an) + adj + noun + in + noun/noun phrase.

Ví dụ:

⟶ The period from 1975 to 2000 witnessed upward trends in the consumption of hamburgers and pizza.
⟶ Someland saw upward trends in the consumption of hamburgers and pizza over the given period.

Noun/ noun phrase + verb + (adv) + time phrase.

Ví dụ:

⟶ The consumption of hamburgers and pizza rose significantly over the 25-year period.
⟶ The consumption of fish and chips fell between 1975 and 2000.

Lưu ý: Khi áp dụng các cấu trúc này trong phần General Statement, bạn không cần nêu số liệu cụ thể.

Ví dụ:

⟶ The consumption of fish and chips fell between 1975 and 2000.
⟶ The consumption of fish and chips fell from 100 to around 38 times eaten between 1975 and 2000.

3. Các trường hợp điển hình trong Line graph

3.1.  Biểu đồ có xu hướng tăng

Một số từ vựng liên quan:

• upward/rising trend
• increase/rise/grow (v)
• increase/rise/growth (n)

Ví dụ:

⟶ There was an upward trend in the number of moviegoers in Someland from January to May.

3.1.  Biểu đồ có xu hướng giảm

Một số từ vựng liên quan:

• downward/falling trend
• decrease/fall/drop (n/v)

Ví dụ:

⟶ There was a downward trend in the number of moviegoers in Someland from January to May.

3.3. Biểu đồ không có hoặc có rất ít sự thay đổi

Một số từ vựng liên quan:

• remain (v) stable/ unchanged
• no change (n)

Ví dụ:

⟶ The number of moviegoers in Someland remained stable from January to May.

3.4. Biểu đồ có sự dao động

Một số từ vựng liên quan:

• fluctuate (v)
• fluctuation (n)

Ví dụ:

⟶ The number of moviegoers in Someland fluctuated from January to May.

3.5. Biểu đồ có một xu hướng tăng và một xu hướng giảm

Một số từ vựng liên quan:

• Sử dụng “but, while, whereas” để tạo câu Complex,
• “and “để tạo câu Compound

Ví dụ:

⟶ The number of moviegoers in Someland experienced an upward trend from January to March before undergoing a downward trend in the last two months.

3.6. Biểu đồ có một xu hướng thay đổi và một xu hướng không thay đổi

Một số từ vựng liên quan:

• Sử dụng “but, while, whereas” để tạo câu Complex,
• “and “để tạo câu Compound

Ví dụ:

⟶ The number of moviegoers in Someland experienced an upward trend from January to March whereas the period from March to May saw no change.

3.7. Biểu đồ có quá nhiều xu hướng khác nhau → Không suy ra được xu hướng chung

• be erratic (adj) (moving or behaving in a way that is not regular, certain, or expected): thất thường

Ví dụ:

⟶ The trend in the number of moviegoers in Someland was erratic.

3.8. Biểu đồ có mốc thời gian trong tương lai

a. Tiếp tục xu hướng

Một số từ vựng liên quan:

• will/may/might + verb
• be predicted/forecast to + verb
• continue the/this trend: tiếp tục xu hướng

Ví dụ:

⟶ The number of moviegoers in Someland saw an upward trend from 2000 to 2020 and is predicted to continue this trend over the last 15 years.

b. Phá vỡ xu hướng

• buck the trend: phá vỡ xu hướng

Ví dụ:
